　岐阜市川原町　Gallery Saganで「吉川充　陶展」が開催されている。

　吉川充氏は中国古代の青銅器に興味を持ち、土に関わり始めた当初から、土物石物の素材に関わらず、大らかな作品を創り続けている。

　その作品つくりの原動力は、人並み外れた好奇心である。その情熱は、人に説明を始めると止まらないことから推察できる。黒柳徹子さん顔負けの「窓ぎわの陶徒ちゃん」である。

　彼の2006年の陶展の講評で、「この作家の面白いのは、沈黙が怖いのか、会えばひっきりなしにしゃべりだして止まらないことである。」とある。2023年Saganでの陶展でも、それは変わらない。喋るということは、脳生理学的に脳の活性化に効果がある。それが吉川氏の原動力であるようだ。好奇心は、芸術家のエネルギー源である。青春は年齢ではない。好奇心を失ったら、芸術家の青春は終わる。古希を迎えても吉川氏の青春は続く。吉川氏は「古典を咀嚼しながら、そこから新しい表現を探り出す」が信念である。吉川充には、老成も枯れるという作風もないのである。氏は永遠の芸術を求めている。

青春

　吉川さんと話していて、サムエル・ウルマンの「青春」の詩を思い出した。

青春とは、人生のある期間ではなく、心の持ちかたのを言う。
青春とは、薔薇の頬、紅の唇、しなやかな肢体ではなく、強靭な意志、豊潤な創造力、炎える情熱をさす。
青春とは、人生の淵泉の清新さと、夢およびそれを実現させる計画を抱だいた心の状態を言う。
青春とは、怯儒を退ける勇気、安易を振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。ときには、20歳の青春よりも 60歳の人に青春がある。年を重ねただけでは人は老いない。理想・夢を失うときに初めて人は老いる。
歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、情熱を失えば心もしぼむ。苦悩・恐怖・失望により気力は地に這い、精神は芥となる。
60歳であろうと16歳であろうと人の胸には、驚異に魅かれる心、おさな児のような未知への探究心、人生への興味の歓喜がある。君にも吾にも見えざる駅逓が心にある。人から神から、美・希望・喜悦・勇気・力の霊感を受けるかぎり君は若い。
霊感が絶え、精神が皮肉の雪に覆われ、悲歎の氷に閉される時、20歳であろうと人は老いる。頭を高く上げ、希望の波を捉えるかぎり、80歳であろう人は青春として生きる。

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and suppleknees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetites, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by desering our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is convered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.
